Are you ready for marriage? Are you ready to start a family? Are you ready to be out in the world on your own? If the answer is No to any of these questions, then you need to be cautious about the feelings you are experiencing.

If you ignore the consequences of your actions just because you are feeling intensely about another person, you could forfeit some very important opportunities in your life. There is high school to finish; missions to serve; advanced schooling to consider; making a living to think about; and a family to get ready for.

So, what do you do about these amazing feelings you are having? Most importantly, realize that you can have control of yourself.

Make good choices.
You may like being alone with the one you love, but that may not be a wise choice. Go out with groups of friends. Occasionally include your special person in your family’s activities. Don’t stay out too late. Don’t test the limits of your self-restraint. Enjoy each other’s company, but keep all the lights on.

Become friends. It seems crazy, but sometimes loving someone and liking them don’t go together. Discover if you two can be best friends. Can you talk easily about things? Find out about each other’s hobbies, habits, and interests. Spend time with each other’s friends. See if you still like being together without any hand holding or good-night kisses.

Be realistic. What’s worrying your parents? Are you giving up your other friends? Are you avoiding your family responsibilities? Are you letting your grades slip? Are you getting too physically involved? Love should make every aspect of your life better, not worse.

Wait for the right time. If your feelings of love are good and righteous, they will last. Since you are too young to pursue a permanent relationship, relax and enjoy being young. Get to know other people. Get involved in many activities at school and church. Participate in sports you like. But put love on the back burner. If this person is the right one for you, the one who will go with you to the temple, the person you will love for eternity, then your love will last during the time it takes you to finish growing up.

“Q&A: Questions and Answers,” New Era, Dec. 1992, page 17

January 2007 Calendar

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5007121845669429346" style="FLOAT: left; Marissa D. Thompson (New Era, Oct. 1997)

Being grateful for what you have is a good idea. Here are some ideas to help you remember to be thankful this month—and the rest of the year.

• In your journal, make a list of things you’re thankful for.
• Memorize the words to a song about gratitude. Such as “Count Your Blessings” (Hymns, no. 241) and “Because I Have Been Given Much” (Hymns, no. 219)..
• During your scripture reading, highlight verses about giving thanks. Write your favorite gratitude scriptures and display them on your bedroom walls as a reminder to be thankful.
• Do small acts of service for others that will cause them to thank Heavenly Father for good friends.
• Make your personal prayers more sincere by taking time to think before you pray. Here's the wrap-up:

We had such a cute theme. The stake (it was stake camp this year) chose "How does your garden grow". Each ward was assigned a value and chose a flower to go with the associated value-color. We had integrity, which is purple, so our flower was the petunia.

Every ward had to make up a skit. We lip-sync/acted out the old song "I'm a Lonely Little Petunia In An Onion Patch" by Two Ton Baker. The moral of the story is that even when you are in a stinky situation you can stand tall like the petunias and keep your integrity strong. *Way cute.* Our ward's camp cheer: "We are petunias, mighty and tall. It will make more than onions to make us fall. Scriptures and prayer will be the glue, to make our integrity stong and true!"

We played the iron rod game. Where a string is tied over obstacles and the girls are blindfolded and have to 'hold to the rod' and make it to the end. It turned out really good. Some of the leaders were good influences (tried to get them to stay on the rope) and others were bad (tried to get them off the rope). I was an advisary. I told them to let go of the 'rod' and follow me. Nobody followed me off the course, but Hubby got some people off because he told them they were at the end (when they really weren't). They believed him, but he was really just being the advisary. Afterwards they all talked about how hard it was. But really, what was hard was to be the advisary. I got better and better at it; which I don't necessarily think is a good thing. That just proved to me how good the advisary really does get, and how much harder that makes it on us. What made my role extra hard was when the girls started singing. While they were waiting to be put on the rope they all had gathered in a circle and started singing hymns. One hymn after another. It really made my job tough! How could I influence them to do the wrong when they were singing and bringing the spirit in?! Anyway, good lessons were learned that night; by girls and by leaders.

I learned a lot more about the girls than I need to know. I now know what a turtle head is. Don't ask.

A lot of the leaders from the other wards kept complimenting out girls on how unified they were. They were all having a great time. And they all got together. But honestly, I think our unification came from how blunt we all were with each other. See the above point. (hehehehehe). Nothing was sacred (except the spiritual stuff.... you know what I mean). We just had a great time with each other!

When a group of LDS young women sneak down to the Baptist boys bible camp that's next door to where we are camping I sure hope they leave some Books of Mormon.

Hubby came up for the last two days (to be our priesthood). One thing he noted that is different at girls camp than at boys camp is all the cheers and singing. The girls are always singing and cheering and having a good ol'time. Let's see.....

Song#1: (this has hand motions tht go along with it) "Oh a boy, without a Mormon girl, is like a ship, without a sail, it's like a boat without a ruddder, it's like a ship without a sail. Oh a boy, without a Mormon girl, is like a wreck, upon the sand. There's only one thing worse, in this universe, and that's a Mormon girl, I said a Mormon girl, I mean a Mormon girl without a man...... we oughta knoooooooooowwwww...."

Song#2: (to the tune of "Popcorn Popping on the Apricot Tree) I looked out the window and what did I see? Tall dark and handsome returned miss-o-na-ary. Spring had brought me such a nice suprise. Tall dark and handsome right before my eyes. I could take an armful and kiss all three. But only one for eternity. It wasn't really so. But it seemed to me, Tall dark and handsome returned miss-o-na-ary.

*~*~* It was a fun girls camp!!! *~*~*

Secret Sister gifts (You Are...)

Each day for my secret sister gift I gave an item with a poem I wrote and a story from Chicken Soup For The Soul. Here they are: (I found a lot of the stuff on sale.... I've already posted about it in the forum, but I felt impressed to put it here too. I think this was the best eye-opening activity thus far for our new ward.

Okay, you've seen the Amazing Race. Teams get clues that lead them to other clues and so on.... the Laurels were in charge of this and they did a great job at keeping it a secret.

During opening exercises the Bishop reminded the leaders that as the drivers they need to be good examples and follow all state, national and federal laws during this game. They could also NOT help the kids with their clues.

After opening exercises, the kids grouped themselves with a driver (a leader) by how ever many open seats (with seatbelts) the driver had. Then the groups lined up to get their first clue. The clue cards had a scripture reference and an approximate address of where the next clue card would be (to help the drivers). At every stop there was a person in the parking lot waiting in car with The Amazing Race sign on it. That person gave the team the next clue. (Make sure the leaders, at least, know they are looking in parking lots so your kids don't get in trouble running around and inside public buildings.)

Now I will post the clues: (but not the addresses, because they would not make sense to you). I am trying to remember the references as best I can.....
CLUE#1: 3 Nephi 11: 26 "And then shall ye immerse them in the water, and come forth again out of the water."
---> The pool!
CLUE #2: Something about books.
----> The library!
CLUE #3: Something about riches.
----> The bank!
CLUE #4: I can't remember this one at all.
----> The park!
CLUE #4: Deut. 31: 12 "Gather the people together, men, and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God, and observe to do all the words of this law"
----> Back to the Church! Running around the city and playing the game was fun.

BUT HERE's THE KICKER. The Bishop had asked people from his work -- people we didn't know -- to help with the game. He had planted little service opoprtunities at each stop.
STOP #1 (the pool). Near the car with the next clue there was a car with it's hood up. Their problem? "The antifreeze was low"
STOP #2 (the library). A man with a sling on his arm crossed our path as we walked to get our next clue. His problem? He "dropped" his books all over the ground.
STOP # 3 (the bank). The man had a handicapt sign in his car, but I honestly didn't know what service we were supposed to do there. ummm....
STOP #4 (the park). A car was parked to the side of the parking lot where a man had "lost his keys". The group that stopped to help him found them under his seat.

When everyone got back to the church the couple with the "broken down car" were our speakers. Only one group stopped to help where they saw a need. Everyone else felt pretty bad for not giving service. It was a realy eye opener. The brownies and ice crem made them feel better though!

Songs for Manual 1 Lesson 6, "Finding Joy Now"

I am thinking about using these joyful songs in my lesson on "Finding Joy Now" (M1, L6). I like to play music with the lessons I give on Sunday. This is a list of the song I played last year, and what lesson I played them with. Some lessons have more that one song. Sometimes I play the songs at the beginning, during, or to conclude the lesson. This list only includes lessons I had songs for. I didn't have a song for every lesson.

Currently we are in Manual 1 -- I am working on that music list. / VALUE PROJECTS ?
There are two types of goals that will be met through the Personal Progress Program. Value Experiences are smaller goals, while Value Projects are just that, projects! Value Experiences can be completed in a shorter amount of time, while the young women should choose Value Projects that are meaningful and will allow her to grow according to that value. The values are Faith, Divine Nature, Individual Worth, Knowledge, Choice & Accountability, Good Works, and Integrity.

PASSING OFF VALUE EXPERIENCES
There are 9 Value Experiences per value. The Young Woman completes 3 required and 3 optional of the 9 value experiences (per value). This totals 6 of the 9 Value Experiences (per value). Always, the first 3 Value Experiences in each value are required; and the others are to choose from. The last two are left blank so the Young Woman may make-up and write-in her own Value Experience (in accordance to the value, and it must be approved be parents/Young Woman Leader). When the Young Woman finishes a Value Experience she gets it passed off by her parents or Young Woman leader. The parents or Young Woman leader put their initals in the spot located near the Value Experience that is finished.

PASSING OFF VALUE PROJECTS
Once the Yoong Woman finishes the 6 out of the 9 value experiences, they get to choose one Value Project. This should be a project that reflects attributes of that value, and something that interests the young woman. When the Young Woman has completed her chosen Value Project she discusses it with her Parents or Young Woman Leader; who will initial it, showing it has been completed. Once the 6 Value Experiences and the 1 Value Project are completed, the young women has passed off that Value.

HOW MUCH TIME DO THE YOUNG WOMEN HAVE?

The Young Woman has all 6 years in the Young Woman Program to complete the Personal Progress Program. The young women may pass off goals and value projects in any order they choose; but the easiest way is to pass off one value at a time. When the entire program is finished she is recognized. Different wards may have different practices for recognition. There is a Personal Progress Tracker on page 67 of the Personal Progress Handbook so the Young Women may track their own progress.

YOUNG WOMAN LEADERS IN THE PERONAL PROGRESS PROGRAM

Young Woman Leaders encourage the girls to complete Value Experiences and Value Projects. Young Women Leaders and parents may sign off completed goals for the Young Women by initialing near the completed goal. Young Women Leaders may also participate in the Personal Progress program by completing the Value Experiences and Value Projects. Youth can use the 2006 theme to explore ways to give service, share the gospel, and live gospel standards as outlined in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet.

--------------------------

From www.lds.org

Organization of the Young Women Program

The organization of the Young Women program is as such:

Beehives (age 12-14)

Mia Maids (age 14-16)

Laurels (age 16-18)

The organization of the Young Women program Leadership is as such:

President

1st Counselor (also over the Laurels)

2nd Counselor (also over the Mia Maids)

Secretary

Mia Maid Advisor

Beehive Advisor

Camp Director (as needed)

Assistant Camp Director (as needed)

Sports Director (as needed)

The organization of participant (the girls) leadershipis as such:

Each group (Beehives, Mia Maids, Laurels) have a young woman who is in each of these positions for each group. Boys of the same age are in the "Young Men's" program. These two youth organizations collectively are called "Mutual". They meet in their designated groups and learn lessons every Sunday at church. They also meet once a week for 'Mutual' for and hour or two in the evening. 'Mutual' is a time for fun and for growth as an individual. Planned activities may include learning to sew or cook, playing a sport (basketball, fotsal, etc.), or just playing games. The activities are designed to help the youth grow as individuals to be outstanding citizens.

www.lds.org
